Men's health Nutrition Consults
Men are under a lot of pressure. Let’s face it, Life is hard and as we age the responsibilities increase and when ignored sometimes the symptoms our body’s present as a warning get louder or more pronounced.
Men generally wait until symptoms hit severe before they book a consult.
Usually, the first thing they will say during or at the end of the first consult is “I wish I’d booked sooner”…
In Clinic practice as a Nutritionist, I see Male clients across every age group. But there is a common group of symptoms Men book in for which I’ve highlighted below. They often feel at a loss to what to do next to improve things. They’re not sure how they got there but they know something needs to change…
The most common symptoms Men book in for I’ve found are:
Gut Issues - That have got so bad they can no longer eat out or enjoy a beer with friends.
Maybe you noticed one day you got a bloated belly after a meal and dismissed it then over the next few months, you started feeling more and more tired and noticed that the bloating is happening most of the time but now there’s also headaches, and weird aches and pains and your mood is also spiraling most days…. You’re not sure what’s setting it off and you’ve stopped eating all the foods you thought were problematic and now you’re at a loss what to eat but are definitely missing the days of being able to eat whatever you liked.
Brain Fog & lack of Energy - It’s so bad they are finding it harder and harder to focus at work. Waking up tired, wanting to nap constantly and not getting a deep sleep at night. Forgetting things and having those blank moments. Relying on coffee or energy drinks to keep you going. You might also be more snappy than you’d like to admit.
Stress, Anxiety and/or feelings of depression - Struggling to find the joy or not able to overcome stressful moments, Your heart might be racing more than it used to and returning back to a calm state takes longer. Maybe it’s keeping you up at night or making you feel sick, you wish you could just switch it off.
Immune Support - They’re getting sick more regularly or feeling like they’re never getting on top of things. It started with one cold and just kept going. You can’t catch a break!
Fertility & Libido - They’re wanting to start a family of have been trying. Or they’re finding they’re too tired for intimacy or lacking desire when it never used to be an issue.
Weight loss - The waistband is getting tighter, they’ve lost muscle definition, finding it harder to get motivated for exercise, short of breath and just feeling blurgh. Your GP has raised concerns and has recommended you lose weight or risk developing Metabolic syndrome (pre diabetes or cardiac concerns).
Sports Nutrition - They’ve been training hard and it’s not yet paying off as much as thought. Energy is not as high as you’d hoped and you’re not sure if you’re eating the right amount to fuel your daily needs. Or maybe just curious to know or ask questions about what else to enhance current training. You’ve read all the hype and want to know what’s right for you.
What does that all look like from a clinical perspective?
During a Nutrition Consult we start at the beginning, look at your goals, get a review of symptoms and match it to your diet, Assess any Nutrient gaps first such as energy intake, macro and micro nutrients ratios and match that to your symptoms, then look at whether pathology testing is required or review any tests you’ve already had.
Most of the time, Lori will conduct a Zinc analysis (liquid taste test) at your first consult. Zinc is a precursor for Testosterone and Men use a lot daily! It’s not uncommon to be low, and easy to rectify. Zinc and Copper compete against each other in the body and can displace each other so this is also looked at from a diet perspective. We’ll also run through a summary of other important Nutrients essential for Men’s optimal health.
Next we’ll look at Gut health and get a complete picture of digestion, bowel movements and energy. You’ll be amazed how much talking about the gut can give provide a clear idea of where the gaps are.
We’ll set a plan around food, lifestyle and movement and discuss any supplements that might assist immediately and long term before dietary & lifestyle changes can take full affect and what discuss changes to expect along the way.
Lori uses Practitioner Grade supplements from a variety of sources including Metagenics, Designs for health and Bioceuticals. Supplements are always optional and you’ll be advised why they have been suggested and what benefit they provide so you can make an informed choice.
